Food & Drink Bloggers’ Brunch at Supper

4 April 2011

On Saturday, Wendy Kirby (La Phemme Phoodie) organized a food and drink bloggers’ meetup at one of our favorite spots, Supper.  While LeeAnne and I are hesitant to turn down a trip to Supper on a normal day, the chance to make new friends and hang out with old—all while eating Supper’s wonderful food—could not be missed.

At our little soiree, we were treated to appetizer-sized versions of Supper’s red velvet waffles (with sweet cream cheese mousse, toasted pecans and molasses bourbon cherries), Dixie Biscuit (scrambled eggs, country ham and pimento cheese on a cathead biscuit with white grits & housemade pickles), the Supper Burger (with caramelized onions, smoked bacon, roasted tomato and gruyere with housemade pickles and duck fat potatoes), Dock Street Pancakes (made with Dock Street Porter and topped with candied apples, vanilla suds and housemade cracker jacks), and, of course, the end-all be-all of food at Supper: the Supper Dog, a housemade hot dog of pork shoulder, wrapped in bacon and deep fried, served with barbecued onions, sauerkraut and beer mustard on a housebaked bun, with a side of buttermilk fried pickles. A complimentary mimosa was also presented to all in attendance.

Dock Street Pancakes and a Maduro Brown Ale.

While the Supper Dog was—and always will be—the obvious highlight for me, Greg of PourCurator and I were interested in sampling the Dock Street Porter pancakes with a beer to see how well it paired.  Once Greg spotted Cigar City’s Maduro Brown Ale in the refrigerator, we each ordered one to try.  We briefly thought about the Breckenridge Vanilla Porter, but ultimately decided it would be way too sweet with the pancakes.   The brown ale cut back on some of the sweetness from the candied apples and enhanced the toasty flavor of the cracker jack popcorn. A successful pairing for sure, and kudos to Supper for having a quality beer like the Maduro on hand.

Food aside, it was nice to see some old friends and make new friends, and especially to chat with Mitch and Jen again.  I have not found a place in Philly with more approachable owners and a more chatty, engaging chef.  The fact that they took their time to hang out with us, chat, and above all provide their space and service for our meetup was above and beyond the norm for restaurants in Philadelphia.  I strongly suggest to anyone who hasn’t already been to get to Supper as soon as possible, for whichever meal you’d like—they’re all delicious.
